In the news today the government are proposing to cut housing benefit from 25 year olds. Us carers have to work really hard for our allowance (not benefit), some have to give up work to help so financially worse off. Why can't the government get these people on long term work Who think that work is not for them and get them out in the community to help us carers, even if it's getting a prescription from the chemist or shopping, every little helps. There are also so many cuts to services, but an increase in people out of work.

I had to not only give up working 20 hours a week but had to pay back carers 3000 £ so my carers allowance is now only 37£ a week and I can't work on top of it. I find it scary and feel like not only can I not provide for myself and my child who I care for, but that now because I'm not working I am isolated... It's so hard some days
I agree working gave you the freedom to look around for mortgages and gave you that sense of independence for your family. It's not fair that you have to pay back, I found last year that my roof was leaking so had to take out a loan from the social fund, but had to pay it back, however if I had committed a crime and was coming out of prison this would not of needed to been paid back as it would of been a grant to help my get back on my feet. I have never broken the law in my life, and always worked. Getting help now is a nightmare, so why can't the people not working on long term benefits get out in the community and help us carers ?
I know. It makes no logical sense at all. Just like people on income support make more per week than carers who would actually like to be working if given the chance. Maybe we should start collectively writing letters to our MP's and the newspapers. But in order for us to make an actual impact we'd need a lot more people behind us. I agree completely re:people on long term benefits helping those in the community. Volunteer work should be mandatory.

I think it needs a bit of hard hitting publicity rather than the 'pat on the back for the wonderful carers' stance taken by politicians and many organisations.  I think adverts which show how carer's health is affected, the high mortality rates among carers, how carers exist rather than live their lives.  At the end of the advert spell it out that ANYONE can become a carer and not through choice.  Put in a sucinct way which causes shock and discomfort to the world at large.  If you don't get it across to everyone that it might touch THEIR lives then carers will continue to be ignored.  I think many people think carers are some sort of dole scroungers they should be re-educated very soon, I suspect that the government might well hit carers next.
